Global Chess League Season 4's penultimate round-robin day at The Lalit Ashok did what the standings suggested it would. Alpine APL Pipers and Ganges Grandmasters, the two teams sharing the lead, both won their Friday matches, and with one round of the group stage left, they are now the only two teams realistically in the running for Sunday's final.

PBG Alaskan Knights 7-13 Triveni Continental Kings, 5:00 PM
A match between the two bottom teams could not change anything at the top, but Triveni took three wins with Black and turned twelve of their thirteen points out of them. Zhu Jiner beat Kateryna Lagno in 44 moves for her first win of the season. Alexandra Kosteniuk pounced on an error from Nino Batsiashvili, spending one of her two remaining minutes to work out the refutation, with her queenside pawn majority deciding it. Pranav Venkatesh forced Abhimanyu Mishra's resignation on the Prodigy board and took Player of the Match. PBG's points came from Arjun Erigaisi beating Wei Yi and 15-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus beating Aravindh Chithambaram, neither of which did much for their final hopes. Alireza Firouzja drew Vishy Anand on the Icon board for the only split game of the match, and said afterwards that things had gone wrong for his team from the start of the season, but that he was glad to take the win. Triveni and PBG remain level at the bottom of the table.
Alpine APL Pipers 9-7 FYERS American Gambits, 6:30 PM
Two teams entered this match level on match points and game points, and Alpine came out in the top two. Carlsen ended Candidates 2026 winner Javokhir Sindarov's three-game winning streak on the Icon board, allowing his own e-pawns to be doubled in a Ruy Lopez to open the f-file, then forcing resignation on move 36 with a kingside attack. It is Chess.com's Game of the Day. Anish Giri held a draw against Nihal Sarin that he called critical to the result. The match-winning point came from Vidit Gujrathi against Daniil Dubov, a 96-move rook and knight endgame that ran into a time scramble; Dubov had two pawns for the piece and real drawing chances, and his 51...f3 was the right idea to trade off White's remaining pawns, but the position was too hard to hold at the time control and Vidit converted. Divya Deshmukh, still struggling in her debut GCL season, ran out of time on move 34 against Bibisara Assaubayeva for the only Alpine loss of the day. Carlsen won the Player of the Match award and handed it to Vidit, saying the man who won them the match deserved it more.
Ganges Grandmasters 16-1 CheQ Mumba Masters, 8:00 PM
Ganges had White on every board and turned it into the biggest win of the tournament. Ian Nepomniachtchi beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in a Four Knights Sicilian on the Icon board. Levon Aronian beat Pranesh M and called the result a sign his team has serious intentions for the league, a turnaround after a mixed Day 6. Leinier Dominguez ground out a bishop-versus-knight endgame against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Leon Luke Mendonca won the last game to finish, against Bardiya Daneshvar, long after the match was safe. The individual highlight belonged to Stavroula Tsolakidou, whose 26.Be6 against Carissa Yip earned her Player of the Match; like Carlsen, she passed the trophy on, to team captain Adhiban Baskaran. Polina Shuvalova's draw with Harika Dronavalli was the only game CheQ took anything from all night. With the loss, the Mumba Masters are out of the top-two race but remain alive for third place.
What Day 7 settles
Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine APL Pipers are both on 18 match points with one round to go, and Ganges holds top spot on the tiebreak, 88 game points to 82. Both now need only to win their last round-robin match to book the final. FYERS American Gambits, on 15, need one of the two leaders to lose and would still have to beat CheQ Mumba Masters convincingly to make a case on game points. Day 8, the last day of the round robin, is three matches from 5:00 PM: Triveni Continental Kings v Alpine APL Pipers, PBG Alaskan Knights v Ganges Grandmasters, and FYERS American Gambits v CheQ Mumba Masters. The third-place match and the final follow on Sunday 13 September.
