The Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2024 is set to honor India’s chess prodigies who have showcased exceptional talent on the international stage. The awards ceremony, scheduled for February 22 in Lucknow, will recognize outstanding performances in men’s, women’s, and para chess categories.
Men’s Chess Player of the Year Nominees:
- Gukesh Dommaraju: Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Gukesh achieved a peak FIDE rating of 2794 in October 2024. He made history by winning the Candidates Tournament and clinching both individual and team gold medals at the 45th Chess Olympiad. Gukesh further solidified his legacy by defeating China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at 18.
- Arjun Erigaisi: Hailing from Warangal, Telangana, and born on September 3, 2003, Arjun reached a career-high FIDE rating of 2801 in December 2024, becoming the 16th player globally to surpass the 2800 mark. His 2024 achievements include victories at the Menorca Open A, Stepan Avagyan Memorial, and the WR Chess Masters Cup. Arjun also played a pivotal role in securing double gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad.
- Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa: Born on August 10, 2005, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Praggnanandhaa achieved a peak FIDE rating of 2757 in July 2024. He secured 5th place in the highly competitive Candidates Tournament and was instrumental in India’s team gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad.
Women’s Chess Player of the Year Nominees:
- Koneru Humpy: A stalwart in Indian chess, Humpy continued her impressive form in 2024, contributing significantly to India’s success at various international events.
- Vaishali Rameshbabu: Known for her tactical brilliance, Vaishali clinched double gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad, showcasing her versatility across formats.
Magnus Carlsen’s Freestyle Chess Revolution
In a bold move challenging traditional chess norms, five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has introduced “Freestyle Chess,” a variant reminiscent of Fischer Random Chess (Chess960). This format randomizes the starting positions of pieces, aiming to reduce the emphasis on opening preparation and theory.
Supported by German multimillionaire Jan Henric Buettner, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour has garnered significant attention, with substantial investments propelling its global reach.
